[reflection]: About My Country, and My Faith

I have written a post in Facebook, defying a lot of authoritative concerns about the anti-government sentiments which my parents forewarned me (they monitored my Facebook and tell me not to post several things, including my relationship status). In this case, I felt that as a Malaysian and also a Christian, I found the recent occurrence in Malaysia something difficult to articulate. So I raised my post - to find like-minded people responding to the event. It may seem lengthy though, but I thought it deserves repeating:

---------------------------------------------------------------------

"A question for those who share my faith - looking at this event, and understanding the standpoint of the peace rally much akin to Berlin 90s and African American in South US rally in late 80s, how would you respond to Bersih 3.0, and putting your faith in responding to the event?

Especially those who were bred and buttered in Malaysia, how would you put your faith as a basis in responding to Bersih 3.0, albeit the sentiments of unprecedented unfairness you might face on individual accounts?

I kept myself silent long enough to not react rashly towards such politics, but between the line of restrained trust in eventual justice and almost berserk-like hurls of pro-activism, the balancing act proved a lot more draining, especially when I personally faced injustice upfront.

If articulation and constant dependency of believing that 'Thy kingdom comes' (just like the national anthem of Malaysia - 'Tuhan kurnia-kan') lives among us, perhaps we better learn that whatever that is at stake - justice and fairness in governance - God watches us all. And perhaps, there might be hope in believing, like Martin Luther King - "I have a dream... that we are free at last!" - that this peace rally is a wake-up call for all of us, remembering that we don't live each day just to get by.

You may not agree, and you might even reject. Whatever it may be, I'll be honest - I struggle with this too.

Something to think about... not only for us, but for our generation's to come.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Upon sharing I felt quite liberated, yet disturbed. As young, I have taken some interest in reading stories about the Berlin wall fall and the peace rally in South US (Texas) when Martin Luther King showed the world the cruelty of immoral and corrupt governance. Mom always warned me not to be engrossed in such readings (though she secretly read these details with equal interest. In the later part of the year we sit side-by-side as pro-reformalist), but I realized as days gone by, truly as Christians we must address the issue of social injustice here on earth, even though our citizenship eventually will be in Heaven with Christ.

C. S. Lewis wrote something before about the Christians contributing on earth even though they blatantly refuse allegiance to any earthly force and authority. Defying all odds, hospitals and hospices were built because Christians believed in human dignity and human suffering as a means of ministry for those to be departed and to be healed. And the monumental act of justice, in the form of mercy and grace showered through various nations because of the belief of a small group of Christians congregating together to pray for the souls of the lost. In those prayers, God poured our His spirit in the hearts of man the reality of human injustice and practical means against them.

Reading the peace rally conducted by this amazing lady Ambiga Sreenevasan, I started to learn a little bit about her past and her contribution to society. If it rings any bell to my US friends, she received International Woman of Courage Award in 2009, handed to her by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. And for the benefit of my Christian friends, she fought hard for a case for a Muslim convert to Christian back in 2007 (the outcome was a granted apostasy of Lina Joy being a Muslim). For your information, in Malaysia, Muslim is an automated religion subscribed for ethnic Malays. So should anyone convert from Muslim to Christianity, the moral and religious backlash and discrimination was evidently prevalent - especially for ethnic Malay. This is one of the grey area that made Ms. Ambiga fought hard for religious equality. Though personally I struggled to embrace religious equality, I do believe the image of Copts Christians in Egypt protecting their Muslim counterparts while praying on a Friday afternoon in 2010 speaks of our commission given by Christ Himself - love your neighbor as yourself. It was Christ who first demonstrated the Love of God in the form of a human, and to touch the lives of millions of people searching for a meaning in life.

This is the video of Ms. Ambiga who told of the post-Bersih 3.0 and her articulation of what has happened. Something to think about.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vi6sFm-RYxg

We lived in a world ruled by so many injustice and unfairness. We humans failed to live upright with accountable stewardship and transparent governance to our younger generation. Due to the innate character mischievously cultivated by the princes of the world (devils and the evil ones), we let the best of our sinful nature decides - and eventually lead down the path of unrighteousness. And true enough - even on a peace rally akin to Bersih 3.0 (just type Bersih 3.0 in youtube for you to understand what's going on), you can't deny the portrayal of human weakness and our sinful nature. Not all the motivation that led to the rally were noble and moral. But yet - when I think of myself being a Christian - and still dabbles in pornography and my personal distaste towards my sinful lifestyle, I felt ashamed thinking how much the sinful nature obstructs God's vision for us as Christians - spread the Gospel till the end of the world, and reach out for the lost.

Would you, therefore, spend a moment in silence and in prayer for the reflection of the state of social justice in the world wherever you are at, and give some time to let God speak to you, of what He will impart of you?

[short update]: yay! finally I can blog from home!

I wondered what Xanga did, but now I can blog at home - and that gave me a lot more reason to be more active and prudent in my occasional reflection. Yay! Thank God for this avenue.

Been reading Screwtape Letters, and I made it a point to read it as slow as a chapter a day, reading the same chapter twice - once in the morning and once at night.

Hope this will be helpful.

[reflection]: healing through faith

In purpose we try hard to reach for ultimate living, and most of the time, the further we go, the farther we disengage ourselves within - and the gradual steps of futility cast over us like we are the worst among all. Sometimes, I felt that living in such a life bounds to meet with inconsistency or even pretentious fluency.

I thought about life in general, in the past months, and I felt so difficult to comprehend the meaning of life after all. We live in a time when North Korean has initiated some high profile defiance towards western nations - in living with its ideal of communism and pursuit of kingship upon the world. We live in an era where whilst many of the developed countries are having luxurious branding of lives (while living in agony because of materialistic endeavors) - people of similar age are living fearfully each day wondering if today's the last day they would ever see the face of their loved ones in third world countries. We live in a world where prominence of transparent and democratic governance didn't lead us into righteousness and fairness - but well fed into the notorious desires of selfishness from the citizens voting, "He is not doing enough for our neighborhood"; such shouts hardly become a notion of fairness and justice, and yet this is the nation where we see impartiality.

When I reach home every day from work, I felt so tired. Simply tired. The world where we live in is such a mess. I went to work in the morning, being healthy and hopeful for the day ahead (especially when I am getting closer to doing what I enjoyed as a sound engineer) and to have my superior reprimanding about my work ethics but ignore blatantly on the work effort put into. And when I was onsite on work installation and started my deployment, I was appalled by the inhuman treatment my client gave towards the construction workers - people my client thought to be third-rated and do not deserve the same human treatment. "Better be a dog" - though not a statement mentioned, but you could see the face of those dejected Bangladeshi, Pakistani, Indian and Burmese being left out - and was expected to have lunch hour for only 20 minutes whereby their superior and clients could enjoy a meal at Han's restaurant for a good hour with proper seats and arrangement. Above all, when I went away to do another service fault, I was aghast to experience the treatment my client treat me - as if I am less than human. Expect immediate result - but he will go out for a drink with his friends while I work late to solve a problem onsite.

At times, at my bed, when I reflect about the hardness in life, I wondered if there's a meaning in enduring these all. Despite the high position I took in my work place (something that justifies my graduate posting), I often wonder how would my colleagues and my clients react if they were to know that I could have held a better prospect working comfortably in a cubicle elsewhere, with good air-conditioning and excellent benefit in work provision. I could take medical leaves whenever I want to, and take holidays should I felt burnouts. And true enough, that was what I undertook when I first join workforce in my previous company. Good treatment, great benefit, more human treatment.

And in me I felt very uncomfortable. If we were to call to live as those who are poor, heartbroken and dejected, how are we to appreciate the beauty of grace that God bestowed upon us first? The grace that is given is indeed something inconceivable in human logic. Why would God condescend Himself to be used by humanity - especially when He created them?

My experience in this workforce has been something mentally drained. Each day I listened to the difficulties of my colleagues with regards to how the clients see us. How inhuman they seem to treat us - and yet we have to bring a smile upon them to tell them that we would do all our best in serving them well. At times the fake smiles came with after a huge out-pouring of our heart to the four sided wall - thinking that they are the only sympathetic ones that bothered to hear you, albeit their silence.

Reading stories of Martin Luther King, Mother Theresa and eventually the walk through of Christ in the early A.D. taught me something important - this path of humility that I have chosen was not an initiation that I came about to brag on my compassion - it is an example walked by our forefathers that, in faith and nothing else, followed through the humble path that God undertook - because of the condescending mercy that He has poured on humanity - in His accord, not us.

We, who have sinned and fall short of the glory of God - we have veered far and wide from His path for us - we need to unlearn our pride of righteousness (which is like a piece of undergarment stained in our defecation) and relearn the humble path that Jesus has first demonstrated for us. If there's any lesson we who are the Christians and believed first in Him, read again the gospel of John in its totality, and much can be learned from there - the humility that Christ encouraged us to exhibit.

As I end today, I wondered if I have learned to become humble and be a better person. Immediately it struck me to realize how much pride that question brings me. Hence, I need to start reflecting in life - and let God reveal the sinfulness I continued to lavish without knowing.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anyway, just for an update: I haven't been able to update much for the past weeks as I was busy with high profile projects. However, as times go, I realize that there is a need to remain committed in blogging and writing down my thoughts. Personally I think that this is a good practice, and it definitely would be helpful to pen my thought (since I am not much a speaker but a writer) and reflect upon what God has for what I have gone through.

Personally there's a lot of struggle in my journey in faith. I have been pretty much 'alone', though I continue my routine to church (in fact, the church service is the only reason that root myself in Christ). I have been finding difficulties meeting up with my cell group due to different commitments and on recent notes I realize how important it is to keep commitment no matter what. Please pray on this matter for me.

Lastly, I have been learning to draw myself away from sexual temptation and casual flings. It is a start, however - because this habit is something that needs accountability, I think it would take a huge amount of effort and willingness on transparency for me to be very honest, so I think I may need prayer to find back the accountability that I have previously with my mentor (if it is going to be another person, I'll pray that he will grant me mercy and favor and also portraying the reality of his weakness to make me realize that my mentor is also a broken man in need of God's grace). In all sense I pray that things will be in His favor ultimately, and hope that God will show His way to me, even if it is going to be something difficult for me.

In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.

[short note]: work, work, work... and?

I have been dedicating almost 90% of my time at work, then when most of the big thing ends this week, I started to wonder if my dedication has been exhausting my nourishment as a person as well.

Well - to be exact, I spend so much time thinking of serving best in my work place and putting virtues at work - but realizing that at the end of the day, all is vanity. When I come back home, I stared blankly at the ceiling tiles, and a gush of guilt came to me: was that all?

Contemporary terms yet striking throughout centuries: Was That All?

I looked into my life, and wondered what is the meaningful most in life. It is good that I could find God in my working place, and seeking after the peace of good conscience forbearing all the work responsibilities. However, dedicating to work as if it is the only thing in my life - was that all?

Random reflections of the Bible and 20th centuries literature seems to caught me off-guard: apparently that seems to be it.

Jeremiah, Zephaniah, Nahum, Micah - they seem to live solely to prophesy (depending on the kingdom and the state of their allegiance to Yahweh, the God of Israel). Some forbidden for marriages, some denied friendships with peers, some have to suffer death sawn in half. I start to wonder - how is like following God in good and bad times?

Was That All?

Something to think about. Though to be fairly honest (though I remain slightly skeptic, being a fallen human in the image of Invisibile God), I have a little hope in thinking that really, that was it. :)

[reflection]: a life back home and the many thoughts in me

Hey. After a while being absent from the blogosphere, I felt quite a sense of detachment towards 'rants and angers' melodrama in life, and start having more dynamic perspective (the dark times and the good tidings). In such moments I realized how much different I was back then, a year ago, thinking about life that is full of darkness and loneliness. However, I have to stress the importance of those moments - embracing the darker side of me not as to build an identity of it, but to bring to light the darkness that befell upon me and yearning towards the light. It is strange that I should find such revelation when after a period of non-activity online and meeting up with people who I have not been in contact for a while - and to make a conscious effort to root myself in deep talks with them. And when I meant about the deep talks I meant those that touches on something that matters to all of us. Some may have strong kinship towards their belief (like I do), some may draw strength from their interest in music, some have pursuits in career path that they may have gone overboard neglecting their family - though evidently their apparent career pitch upfront betrays the sense of guilt they impart within their hearts on the loss of the intimacy within the family. Different people may have different experience to draw from, and how they relate to these important parts of their lives will reveal their perspective in life, be it in honest sharing or impressive facade.

Nevertheless, I have grown to realize (and still learning in the meantime) the importance of being honest and making the effort to be transparent about living. It is nice to show people the unblemished records of lives that one have, and people may unconsciously draw evident inspiration of living fruitfully from the 'success' testimony that you may impart. But the true strength that I have grown to appreciate and embedded in life are those that stems from difficult livings from people that suffer in anguish all the time - and survived (albeit the scars or the burns). The revealing facts of people living in times of difficulties added the sense of realism and immediate connection with those who struggled in the background with no one listening. I draw a lot of strength from that experience. Movies that relates to broken families, broken sibling kinship, struggles in addictions are part of inspirations for living. However, what really brought me back was relating with people, in real life, their struggles and their effort to make ends meet. This soften my heart and eventually start to see things differently.

When I was in Australia, I went with a good friend who we met during my time in Varsity Christian Fellowship (VCF). On the year when I joined this circle, behind the scene I was still striving to find an identity in life in general. By that time I was exploring the arena of rock 'n roll as my lifestyle. Joining the Christian Fellowship was actually a way of escape from my conventional student living because I thought I need help in 'spirit' to overcome the zealousness that my peers uphold in their studious living. I was, back then, struggling to be a good student, so I decide the alternative - to be the rock 'n roll and live like one. Apparently during the end of my second year, I joined a Bible Study Camp that VCF organized. So off I went to the camp, and in one of the session when there's a group discussion, I saw a guitar. During one of those free times, I went to the guitar, mischievously played a Metallica piece, and was noticed by this eventual friend of mine. Long story short - we knew each other through our common interest in music.

This friend of mine doesn't participate much in my life during the dark days of my life (when I started struggling with pornography, then to my first ex, then to the identity in Christ, then with the second ex, and now with my career path), but he kept me in his prayer from time to time. We used to play music once in a while during our university years, but now we have lost quite a bit. With the recent trip to Australia (with the purpose of watching both Alter Bridge (our favorite band) and Switchfoot (his favorite band), we kindled the friendship 'abandoned' quite a while back, and realized we have grown in years. There are times when we reminiscence some of the old songs that we used to jam and play, but overall we were talking things in different perspective. He has struggles working in wherever he is in, and thinking - praying hard in fact, on moving to another corporation; while I am moving closer towards what I have been gifted in: sound engineering and potentially music production. We have different ideas on things, and though I tend to be the one less inclined to share my view, I respect his ideas and his articulations. He has brought some lights towards my understanding of the Bible in many ways, and I have started to embrace his fellowship more and more nowadays.

We have yet to meet after our return back to Singapore. I was telling him quite a lot on my recent struggles with my family wanting me to be back in Malaysia for good, but he was adamant that things may not work out well in the long run. As usual, he would humbly keep me in prayer once in a while, to pray for discernment in my decision making.

The best thing that I took back from this trip - therefore, is the friendship rekindled that I have with this friend of mine. After 5 years of those days, I felt it worth knowing him.

Thanks Ryan. You have been a blessings to me when I am in Sydney with you. Thanks for the friendship, and let's continue to keep watch of one another.

[At another time, I would write on some reflections in darker tones in life. May need your prayer to keep watch of me from time to time. Thanks]

Hey guys.

Just wanna shout out for an update: I have been busy with work and overnight shifts in order to complete certain project milestones.

And... I will be going off to Australia for a holiday, so hopefully I could take some fresh air before coming back.

Yeah... just for a shout out. Things have been on and off, but I am coping in the name of the Lord. :)

[reflection]: the beauty of poverty and simple-mindedness

As I reflect upon my upbringing since young, I see a gradual shift of difference in my well being and how I look upon at things. Now that I have a career and a relatively stable income every month, I felt more fortunate to be able to stick my work with integrity, knowing that I don't have to worry much about what will happen to me, in my well being, my living expenses and such.

Yet, there are times when I thought about my younger days, and felt that living as a pauper made me growing up to be who I am now - scarred with memories of poverty and difficult living - yet at the same time feeling grateful that I can live off at the end of each day thanking God for giving me the meal to satisfy my physical needs each day. Perhaps it is in this setting that when I thought about poor people on the street that made me have a deeper connection. At times, I wished that I could return to the way of the poverty again - and humbled my heart to seek His face through the littleness in me.

We often forget our position as being a living being created by God, that at various settings He could just dispose us without consulting us. He could just crumbled us in the midst of flood and sweep us off the planet since we made a joke out of ruling the world. And I often wondered (not rhetorically) why did God allow us to live. Yes, we all know that it is by God's Grace, but how much do we know about God's Grace to grant us that kind of wisdom to actually say that God's mercy allow us to live?

This is where I believe that people who are poor (not just in their spirit, but more in literal sense) understood the meaning of grace. I remembered in my youth when all we could afford for entertainment is a small TV bought from a second-hand shop when I was 7 - and I was so overjoyed with being able to watch 'Superman' on cartoon series that I kept tucking my dad along to watch together. Of course - apart from the fond memories of those simplicity in life, I was also taught about the realism of materialistic worth of satisfaction - as my dad quickly scoffed me and told us that he needed to work (he brought back his work from office and do accounting from there on).

I remembered in those days, how simple life was and how easy it was to just be happy and contented with little things - as a kid. Of course, we weren't born entirely in a pauper setting, but much of what we possessed came from humble background. I was lucky to have the first computer in our neighborhood couple of years after the first TV due to my parents' illegal means of getting more money. There's not much repercussions on the illegal means as I didn't know those were illegal until several years later, when I start to make sense of why police came to our house on frequent basis.

Anyway, with this humble background, I remembered the days when I am simply glad just for a day to spend time with my parents and my sister, and we were happily chatting away with things. I also remembered my fond memories of hugging my mom after the first 'Happy Mother's Day' card made when it was my first year in Sunday school - and my mom was overjoyed to see the face of me lighted up.

The thought of these memories - really gave me a glimpse of redemption towards the years later of which I started to see different perspective about my parents and the realism that overtook them.

Now as they grew older and having more grim outlook towards their lives (as aging took a toll over my dad's depression bouts and my mom's emotional stress), apparently it is difficult for them to see through this period of time without their children staying by their side that often. Children like myself spent time working and getting more money in order to have a better life, and often I start to wonder about the meaning of these 'pursuit of happiness and contentment', and thought about the basic of simple living.

I spent time during the end of December not with my church friends, not with my close buddies, not even with the people that I liked - but I spent time with my parents, because I realized that there are plenty of fundamental things about spending time with parents that got lost along the way. I have practiced 'piety' in church, but not with my parents. I have practiced 'diligence' over making sure the work was fine, but not with my parents' need. Sometimes, I felt sad that I have spent most of my time fighting against pornography and sexual temptation - where my parents continued to live each day not knowing about Christ the way I have believed. They knew Christ through various means, but I know how inaccurate the doctrine they have heard taught them.

It is never easy to sit down with my parents to start talking with them and understand them. We have such a huge barrier after several years of me staying in Singapore and overseas at times. Nevertheless, there are many time I thought about simple living, and wondered if making a trip back in Malaysia, forgetting everything that I have ever owned in Singapore (including my intelligence, my musical gift, my glib in conversations, my friendships, my possessions, etc) and just spend the last days with my parents. I tried discussing this once with them, with strong provocation from my mom in particular. "Don't be stupid. We won't be able to feed you even though you tried to be piety. What about your future? You can't just live pleasing us forever."

Yet I sense in those exclamations a betrayal of acknowledgment of the need to be part of the family again. Too long have I been away from them, too long... and they too feel the sense of detachment. I tried very hard to reconcile the difference and the hatred I had for them for years, and for now it started to melt down, one icing at a time. I knew of my mom's adamant stand for her belief in pluralism Buddhism, but there are times when you can tell some hint of fear of living in condemnation forever. I am till this day unsure of what my father's stand is, but I do know that he has not committed to anything yet. He has a rough childhood and now his childhood became the reason why there's no longer continuity with the gathering of his siblings (my uncles and my aunt).

I sometimes wished for simplicity in life, hoping that I could become as naive and as simple as a poor pauper. Sadly, seeing the world is, and where I am, I often sobbed myself in bed every now and then in my bed on the burden for the sinfulness of myself - and of the world. And how difficult it was to relate to my parents and hoping to have them as my model of faith. In this case, they have become my stumbling block in faith, and I could only wish that there's someone who would listen to me and cry with me. I really wished for one.

Couple of years back, I remembered a senior Christian brother who was with me during my first break up - in which he was the only one who met first with my first girlfriend and have a nice conversation back then with 3 of us. Although at the time he also disapproved of the relationship, he was genuinely more concerned about my well being rather than the theological concern of being with a non-Christian. When he opened his mouth after my apparent 'matter-of-fact'-ly story retelling on how I got involved with my girlfriend and the struggles I had as her boyfriend - asking me if I felt all alone all along... I remembered crying for half an hour just to imagine those few words in a sentence - crying all over because he heard me. It took me years to realize that at that point of time, he understood what was actually in my heart the strongest when I chose to find a girlfriend, or distract myself with a casual relationship, or evading my parents or doing things randomly just to get attention. I was feeling very alone - all along.

And till this day, I still feel pretty much alone. With all the gadgets in the world (Facebook, Android, iPad, iPhone, etc), you thought that it would make us feel more connected. Strangely, I feel even more distant from people, and I tend to isolate people more because of the lack of depth of relationship that I had with people in the past. And it is in this setting, that I remembered my younger days during my kindergarten times - as a 7-year-old-boy enjoying his first TV moment with mom and sis watching 'Superman'. Though at that time my dad was busy calculating the salary that he had to make sure to be correct so that everyone in his department get the correct share, in my simple-mindedness I wished that he could just forgo his work, come and sit with me, hold my hand and embrace my small body, and watch the show with enthusiasm. I wished too to go back to the time when in our poverty, I took a paper that was given to me in my Sunday school class, and borrowing from my favorite teacher at that time the small markers, and wrote something about my mom being there for me even though dad was busy, and hug her and having her hug me back - and tell me that everything's alright...

In our poverty, we learn to be humble, simple and content with simple things. The fact that we could entrust each day thanking God that He has provided us with what we need is good enough. And with now, in my loneliness in the room as I reflect upon moments whereby I felt most materialistic fulfilling, I think - those will never be satisfactory as the days when I felt a simple contentment in life.

(It might be all over the place, but as writing I just feel my tears running through. So it could be just writing because of what tucked in my heart for decades. Pray that these tears will be reminder of the mercy that God has showered on me, to remind me of the simple-living in Grace)

Signed. Ren.

Part 2a Journal: Record from the Sojourner [January Reflection]

... continue from the previous journal record... current would be Record 5

Record 5: Smile of a Child

I had made quite a remarkable observation recently while sitting in one of the old-school coffee houses back in my hometown in a rural countryside nearby - a small boy, perhaps no older than 3, trying his best to drink up the milk tea that was ordered by her mom. What caught my attention was the nature of how the child tried his best and insisting his mom that he can handle by himself. Already struggling to sit well among the rest of the family (in normal chairs), he insisted in sitting like an adult and wanting the family to acknowledge the family to look to him as a 'grown-up'. His 'smaller-than-petite' body size is already depriving him of the inviting aroma of the milk tea in front, and I was seriously thinking of how the mom could just leave the child to be - in this state.

Couple of minutes later, the child gave up. Realizing that he had to admit his childish behavior and his child-like capacity, he had to let his mom feed him, slowly yet surely.

Amazingly, the mom did not scold the child for being reluctant to receive help. In fact, she cuddled him by the head, and kissed him a bit. I found such treatment strange though common for parents to do likewise. And looking at the cheeky smiles on the boy, I suspected that he may have wanted attention eventually, and he got his.

Then something hit me in my heart. The kind of relationship that I saw was what I have hoped for in years from my parents, in which none was given. Well, to be fair, not none (perhaps it is the way they treat which is rather different from what I would expect), but something that has tucked the strings of my heart for quite a while.

During my trip back home, there's so many things my parents shared to me that was quite starkly surprising to me. One of the prominent ones is the fact that my parents have decided to buy a house and decide to give us this house as part of the property inheritance. This is one of the most surprising thing done for us, because firstly it was announced before we made any decision. When I first knew of such arrangement, I was already told at that point of time that the cash deposit has been delivered and that I just need to sign the papers in the law firm. There's literally no rooms for discussions and negotiations. At that point of time, I was rather furious that my parents bought a house without our consents and dictate me to travel to and fro Singapore from Malaysia everyday. My mom especially insisted that I work in Singapore (and nowhere else), and stay in Malaysia without fail.

When I first heard it from her in person during the recent December retreat, I almost wanted to vent my anger towards my mom. This was unwarranted for, and without our consent (me and my sister), I would have rejected the offer (which I initially did). When I told her that there will be convenience issue, my mom reasoned me with my poor financial planning skills. As the son, I felt very dejected being the black sheep of the family, being the one who has issue with financial planning - and causing so many problems to my family in terms of looking long term the sustainability. At such days, my mom has touched the right nerve to shut me up and I will have to comply to it.

However, the thought that my parents hold strong decision making onto me even when I am already going to 30 and my parents reaching 70s throw me into a reality check. If I were to reflect on myself - I think I have yet to really grow up and mature as a man that is not only being a good steward, I am also not capable enough to take care of a woman and provide a path of marriage that will ensure her to see me as the man to submit to. Upon realizing it, I was quite disappointed with myself for being quite a failure, of a sort, when it comes to being a man. Apparently my parents still look at me like a child.

That night, after the discussion of my financial state and the housing, my mom talked with me about getting into a relationship. She began to suspect that there's something about me that cause the difficulties in finding a relationship. Due to the nature of not sharing the same belief I find it hard to explain to her that my current relationship status remains single due to my inability to be a good testimony and I am still striving to still understand myself more in terms of preparing myself for who Christ will bring to me (if He wills it. Otherwise, if He intends me to be single... that's something I find it hard to chew on, but I will have to learn to give up to Christ). I explained to her that I felt that time is not right yet and I am still not ready to find a girlfriend that I can envision for the rest of my life. My mom, however, was offended when I said that. Apparently in her opinion, now is the most desperate moment for me, as I am hitting 30. The mark of adulthood, according to her, was to have a wife - which I understood though not fully agreeing to her opinion. She wasn't too happy and accused me for lying. There's plenty of words that she said that won't worth repeating.

That night cause me to reflect upon the smiling child when I saw him in the hands of my mom. It hurts me more to think that I could only observe as a passerby, not being able to live it up.

Record 6: Stillness and The Pursuit of Living

I am not too sure about the next chapter of my life, now that I have to make arrangement to move back to Malaysia and travel daily to Singapore to work and to worship. A good friend suggested that I continue to look for a place in Singapore to stay, while renting the property back in Malaysia as part of my passive income. In addition, my working place has seen some progress - where I am promoted and being given increment (though I don't expect much). There are things in life that are going well, and there are things that are not.

With all that is happening, I can only hope that I can commit to meet up with those people despite the difficulties and the differences. I think that it is vital to not give up the fellowship (unless there's a severe differences and all parties think that it is imminent of a period of separation), but I think the more important thing is to realign the priorities in life in which I need to commit now that I have bigger burdens. Remembering my fragile parents, I find it hard to let go and remain as who I was, beating myself up and continuing to see myself as a dirtbag teenager. Now I need to start facing them 'like-a-man'. Precisely.

I have a small prayer request: please pray that in whatever the circumstances provide, pray that God will lead His way the way He wanted me to be. If this arrangement will make me grow closer to Him, then perhaps please pray that I can endure the circumstances and walk with God closer despite the difficulties. As I journey through my faith, I realize that it is the moments that were meant to destroy that actually helped me to mature, and to grow in faith. Those moments taught me the value of life, and the importance of dependence on a divine Father. Had it not of my struggles in sexual addiction, I wouldn't have realized how fallen I am as a human being. Trying my best to live through the difficulties, I realized how much I needed help. God showed His hands through fellowships, books, people and most importantly the instances of grace despite my deserved condemnation. And so, I think - I would pray that God will sustain me through this difficult time. I am pretty sure that God didn't will me to stay in Malaysia in long term, having established so much connection especially on the future road with fellow brothers and sisters in Christ in Singapore - and the path leading towards writing songs for Christ in Singapore. However, I believe that I need to realign my thoughts and minds to remembering my parents - especially now in their fragility - and the company they want from me, and my sister.

I note that my mom always liked to tell me to be rich, so that people would respect us. Born in poverty, I would understand that my parents would naturally hope that people would at least respect us (and not looking down on us just because we are poor). But I wished that one day, I could gather up courage to tell my mom that, "Well mom, it is in those moments when they look down on us that God is hoping that we look up on Him. Because that is the time that He is hoping to make eye contact with us, lovingly and embracing us." It is those who are in poverty that God has a special heart towards - yet every time when there's such an opportunity in talking about it, I find it difficult to talk to her about it. Perhaps it is because of her apprehensiveness towards institutionalized religion (including her own). Though she is a pluralism Buddhist, she always suspects that any miracle that happened is because there's money involved (being pragmatic, I suppose). I hope that one day something will open her eyes to see the beauty of our Lord. I just pray that God will open her eyes eventually.

I think the posts above are pretty much the left over reflections that I have during the December retreats, and it took me a few months to have thoughts articulated, written in snippets before typing them down diligently in my blog post. I am glad that you guys walk through with me through thick and thin, and thanks for staying with me so far. Hope that during this coming year, you will take time to reflect on your walk of faith with God, and rediscover how much you need to do/be in order to continue the journey of faith, as exemplifies by our forefathers of faith.

To Jesus be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

[revert]: returning to Xanga Blog

Hey guys,

With my recent reflection on not having a community to relate to, I decide to revert back to using Xanga Blog. Sometimes, it is good to be in solitude - away from the crowd and think for things on my own.

However, the recent occurrence of being isolated became quite carnal - especially when the desire is became more inward looking rather than outward looking. In the end, I realized the importance of accountability with brothers and sisters-in-Christ who are able to actively engage. Blogspot didn't give that avenue much - probably because of the 'easier accessibility' of hacks and spams. This may detract many people who are close to me to send their comments.

Anyway, please continue to visit my old blog. I posted something recently that may touch a chord on your own journey.

Part 1 Journal: Record from the Disgraced [December Retreat]

[Disclaimer 1]: It is difficult to comprehend my blogs sometimes. I believe that many people find reading lengthy commentary about lives being rather boring at times. Given a choice, they would rather read something brief to catch up with what's happening in life. Well, anyway I tried my best to write my journal being mindful of my target audience.

At times, it gets more impersonal when such writings occur. At times, such writings demand a lot of ‘perspective consideration’ from my readers. Thankfully (or regretfully, depending on how you see it) the readers are quite few in numbers. So the writing consideration inclined more towards own reflection and occasional ramblings. For this I hope you don’t mind the occasion exclusion of you, my reader, in the story to share certain insights.

In addition, there are some parts of the journal that were highly sensitive and could cause discomfort in digesting the element of vulnerability. Should such cases occur, it is okay to take some time off from reading my blog – and re-read it again after a day or two. I tend to write my articles on the same day in long windows because those are often the results of my contemplations for days, weeks or months sometimes. Please bear with me if you are visiting here for the first time.

[Disclaimer 2]:  There’s one special journal in this post entry that is quite sensitive for me, in which it may put myself on the immediate front of being judged as an exhibitionist. May I suggest that if you have reservation talking about sexual addiction in explicit and disturbing details – please skip Record 3, and move to the last Record (Record 4). It is one of my most intimate blog that I find it necessary to post (even though it might seem left hanging without any resolution). I have intentionally draft this post as such, though I felt genuinely easier to conceal my darkest secret in my own chamber and continuing to let it rot. Therefore, please be mindful. You will be warned of the content again when you reach the article.

[Disclaimer 3]: I wrote personal reflections, which most of the time has the element of my spiritual belief saturated throughout my writings. It may not be to your liking should you find too much element of spiritual accountability (if you happen to not share my faith being a Protestant), but I do encourage you to open your mind to read up articles from the standpoint of a friend (close ones perhaps). It is unlikely that if you are my close friend, you would find it distasteful to read such articles because you have seen how I live my faith (albeit positive and negative influences that I carry around). I don’t preach much in my blog post, but I do tend to reason out some of my endeavors by looking through the lens of a Christian spectacle. Nevertheless, should you think that such reflection may bother you, do what you deem well for yourself.

Record 1: Where in lies the biggest regret – is keeping in mind things he has never let gone.

I always sought to ask myself the purpose of me living all myself out – and I tend to forget the nature of giving my best for life most of the time. Perhaps the definition of ‘living-to-the-fullest’, despite the allegory on our consumerism-materialistic-successful living formula which of course has narrowed the scope of true living, has taken huge precedence in everyone’s living at least once in their lifetime. We often forget what it really meant to live well – for our own good or for someone we hold dear for.

It is quite possible to lose ourselves in the midst of trying to be someone – in which sometimes the struggle could become meaningless and tend towards fruitless striving towards a greater aim for many people. Therefore, many people sadly moved away from their initial strive and decide to settle for a simpler and easier alternative. Perhaps that was a good move – in that we all should always learn in contentment what is good in life.

In the context of what is commonly understood as ‘contemporary contentment’ sometimes, we seek for the easiest way out, and trying to get the best for ourselves even though we are in the ‘contented’ state. For example, we are prone to always want to get the cheapest solution despite the fact of seeking a ‘contented’ ideology when it comes to purchasing products. By and large – the act of wanting to buy something more than what we have is an act against the conventional contentment so to speak. Hence forth to put a ‘modern’ mentality towards the aspect of practicing contentment, we tend to justify the act of ‘careful selection of breed with quality at a best price justifiable for such product’ becoming our current dogma inculcated in our daily living – for the sake of alluding the fact that the desire of wanting something speaks of our nature of being discontented with what we already have.

With respect towards true contentment, I hardly see anyone walking on earth practicing such notion. In fact, it could be true that there’s no one in the world who would wish to fulfill contentment towards the end of their lives. Truth be told – being contented is easier said than practiced, especially when this is the decade of consumerism and individuality. No one would approve ‘loving themselves as who they are’ and strive to be ‘somebody’ – thus violating the foremost contention of being contented.

But why this debate? Why the argument of contentment?

I believe that we all lived long enough not to deny that in our walk in faith; we tend to always console/comfort ourselves with the kind of living in the contemporary world that we should be thankful that we are not ‘as fallen’ as the people who lack the faith we embraced. Often when we walk up a street and a see a fellow believer, we often engaged in a seemingly convincing conversation of our daily walk and the ‘faithful journey’ that we have walked through. There are a few saints that I have talked with that commonly uphold their mentality being ‘out of the world’, and practicing street evangelism as means to ‘be in the world’. Though there’s genuineness in these acts of evangelism I often wonder how effective/damaging such testimony could bring towards our non-believer (who in the humble opinions of the evangelists were in deep trouble of going to hell, ‘unfortunately’ – a very sarcastic way of seeing our fellow humans as mere commodities meant increase the assets they have).

The common thought they would always try to bring across is the contentment they feel after being a Christian, the change in the worldview and of course, ‘the feeling that I am now good and saved.’ I am saddened whenever such evangelists come to me and share all that they could, without first trying to hear out what I have gone through, for instance. After all the talks, I would normally briefly share that I share the same faith, but I hold some reservations over some doctrines that I see to be rather mistaken.

Apart from the doctrinal error, I would tend to think that those people who often regarded the idea of ‘contentment’ as the best tool for evangelism will never work. I believe contentment has its rightful place in lieu with what matters most, but not in ‘materialistic worth of physical things in life’. That, in my humble opinion, is sorely lacking in our conventional yet contemporary evangelists (implying that this problem is no longer a new observation)

Record 2: What it meant to live and to love from him, yet far from where he should be

Too often, we let the sanguinity of our language gets in the way when we try to converse with people – especially when it comes to asking further about ourselves things that is closer to heart. It is as if we often like to put a blocking view on what’s really happening, and tried various means so as not to reveal what really happened. Not too sure how this works for different group of people, but at least to me – this is one big bad one coming to me. I have to admit that many times, my tongue was caught in action whenever a certain statement was stalwartly thwarted.

Couple of days back, I was conversing with a familiar old friend that we haven’t met for decades. She used to be my classmate back in elementary school and we shared a common interest in math (her being the superior one though – but when young we always tend to create unnecessary competition among ourselves to improve and claim dominance). In our conversation, several times we circled back to living in laidback lifestyle and how different it is between Melbourne and the small city of Singapore. I intentionally iterated many times the difficulties of keeping up with the swift pace in Singapore, in which I made much comparison with Australia, knowing that they have several surfer’s paradise and good ol’ countryside places. Slight backtracking: I always yearned for contemplative living, of course which farming and admiring the rising/setting of the sun being one of my definite ‘must-do’ endeavors.

When she hit the mark of asking what would I like to do, I let the fluency of my subconscious takes place, in which I dwelt onto ‘liking to travel’ being the common answers to whichever mode of questions she inquired of me. Many statements like ‘wanting to explore other places, wanting to settle in a slower pace country, not wanting to stay in Singapore but still would dwell somewhere in Asia’ has become part of the sanguine assertion I put forth.

As I drove home after the conversation, unbeknownst to physical world outside (with my parents obviously disappointed to hear that she is attached – of which my parents tried very hard to put chances between us to develop into more than friends – a possibility that I actually welcomed at that point of time), I was actually rather disappointed with ‘yet-another-attempt-to-be-impressive’ outlook. And true, when I suddenly realized of the ill-intent I had to agree that this had become something that commonly sticks in me whenever a casual conversation took place.

Throughout the night, I contemplated over the conversation, and let it played in my mind several times. As minutes went by, I dwelt more into the frequency of the ‘impressing-myself’ conversation I often had with friends, be it close or distant. There are only a handful group of people that I could say that I shared my heart out, but never fluidly. Most of the time, people who got to know the sincerest and most authentic part of me comes from the fact that I made a human effort to be vulnerable. There’s a part of me that I tried to hold dear, and only those that I bear close friendship with that has the privilege. To date, the closest I have happened to stood by me on the night when I shared my darkest fear in a cold room within a campus. Sadly because of my naiveté embracing on withholding new close friends, we parted our company and since then I hated myself more for rejecting the wider perspective.

It has been a while since I put myself in deep thought over my failure in living, and there are several instances within the train of thought that I would like to revel in my stupidity. In this regard, I decided that I really need to ‘open-up-and-open-wide’. It is no good for any man to be alone, truly spoken by John Donne himself.

I took most of the day the next day just being meditative retrospectively, and took this meditation as a lesson that I need to unlearn – the part of being less ‘impressive’ and be more authentic. If that’s not enough, then the next step to ‘unlearn’ is the part where I am especially reserved and needing so much privacy that I ended up pretty much alone.

Record 3: His setback and the Achilles’ heel that survived for decades

One of the saddest reflections I have had for years whenever a discussion came across on the subject of my maturity is that I struggled the same sin I kept committing year after year. And what’s even sadder is the fact that I seemed to ‘enjoy’ being in this mode of sinfulness because of the short term pleasure it gave me to. Addiction is the rightful word for such misery, but I think what’s deeper within the motivation is what’s bothering me more.

[Disclaimer – reminder]: In the past, I make this part of my reflection sublimely implicit; therefore it seemingly sounded applicable to various addiction struggles. Therefore I intend to make it as clear as possible. Be advised that you might not like what you read. If you are genuinely uncomfortable about this, I pray that you skipped this article altogether, and read the next Record. This may not be easy to stomach through. You are warned.

Since young I have unspoken curiosity over having the aroused pleasure ‘under-the-legs’ whenever chances break in. Various form of arousal came and went, and they served me so well that I had the days gone by feeling satiated by the physical ecstasy and the apparent rush of my heart beat when an orgasm is reached. There said, my tendency to get myself satisfied came from various questionable means.

It is difficult to apprehend the root cause at this stage of my life, when there’s so many instigators that could easily ripped my mind off the conscience. From a simple look at a woman who had low cut jeans and a tight top revealing the mark of her bra to a complicated look at sexual act on the screen could get my mind wandering into my own fantasy within my mind prison. Furthermore the accessibility of my bathroom leaves no doubt that my valium is easily disposed and mindfully hygiene conducts is still upheld. Sad to say, despite the cleanliness of how I maintained things (cleaning myself to make sure no stain and making sure there’s no record of ‘dirty-surfing’ can be found in my laptop), at the end of the day I would be bugged by the question of my dirtiness. Sometimes, I put that off as being ‘relieved’ because of the hard work I had throughout the week, and sorely needing to satisfy myself. Sometimes I was quite upset about certain situation that really got me to my nerve, and releasing the valium was a mean of disengaging me away from the situation. Sometimes, however, for no particular reason, I was turned on by just looking at a woman who apparently is dressing the way that would entice me to fantasize her. Regardless of which mode, I know that I have constantly fed my desire, such that I forgot what it meant to look into a woman engaging in a sexual act on the screen and think of her as a child of God – and possibly needing to get out of the porn industry.

For years I wondered if I have truly gotten better or worse – now that I have subdued a lot of my adrenaline rushes that I embraced in the youth. Couple of years back, I remembered having my first sexual experience with a girl – to the stage of penetration and mutual orgasm. Though it was a great encounter and in finality of fulfilling the fantasy of making love with the embodiment of two becoming one, the subsequent days of guilt was too painful to bear, especially during that time I had to lie to everyone attending the church – giving them the benefit of assuming my walk in faith was upright. In addition, although both of us are consummated with ‘love’ at the point of time when both of us are together, at the end of the act I felt perpetually dirty about the entire affair, and so is her. I remembered asking her why she seemed distant to me after such a passionate sex. Apparently to her this is a common thing, as she always felt the same with whoever she had sex with. Ouch.

That forbidden relationship was over long time. For years we have not met each other, and on that single evening of ‘love consummated’, I have yet to see the relationship blossomed into forever after ever. In fact, I was greatly saddened now that I have tasted the physical feeling and wished that ‘for one night’ I want to enjoy it again. And so, through yearning and finding, I manage to find a casual friend on recent note (a year), and mutually agree to have sex to satisfy our desire of wanting the orgasm. When there are days unbearable, we find time to meet, and have that one night, and the next day go off as friends like it never happened the night before.

When reflecting I was saddened to see how far I have fallen from the tree. Yet because of the addiction I have, every night I had the thought of wanting the feeling consummated again. Plenty nights I waste them all in the toilet vanity. On days when I was extremely horny that I gave a call to meet up with her and have that short moment of ecstasy. I could fully agree that sex is a great thing, and that it really is a blessing for both husband and wife to fully consume themselves in the passion of love. Nevertheless I understood the feeling too well. The cuddling, the embracing, the kissing, the fondling, and eventually the penetration. These are great moments that should encourage married couples to relive the physical passion that God has given graciously. However, as for where I stood – and many of those who have tasted the forbidden fruits – the part where we felt different from the legitimate consummation is what happened after. The penetration ended with orgasm and cleaning up the mess, and sleeping on separate beds for sexual partners only. Not so for couples. They embrace, kiss, hug and eventually smile at each other and look at each other – without feeling guilty or dirty.

I often think about my singleness and the predicament of where I am at the moment. I can’t help but think that I need to get out of my isolation and start doing more productive things. In particular I always yearned for being able to write out stories, concentrate on improving my work ethics, start writing songs, spend more time in devotions, start simple acts of night prayers, and give some thoughts on confessing my sinfulness. But whenever night crawls in, I tend to wish that I could have that single moment with the lady I saw that turned my head towards what’s hiding ‘under-the-legs’.

Many a time – I wished this reflection will bring me back to Christ and start repenting of my besetting sin – the habit that caught up with me for ages. However, too often I fell prey into the hands of ‘pleasure-addiction’, and find it hard to leave it. Reading so many motivational and detracting books did help for a while, but I believe that community is important and in this case imminently helpful in making sure I detract my mind away from sexual temptation. Truth’ll be told – no matter how many motivational tools are made available, if the person remained singularly motivated, no one would see that he is making progress. He could claim that God is seeing progress, but such a testimony proved fallacious. We are commissioned to go out and spread the gospel, and in Paul’s testimony, he willed himself to speak of his unrighteousness and his murderous past in order that Christ’s glory is magnified in his story. So what’s there to glorify if only God knows whether he has become better or not?

A friend dropped me once in a while a note that he is praying for me, and that he wished that I have grown better in my journey of faith with Christ. Nothing more is said because often time I let the time slipped by (supposing to reply him), with a hand ‘under-the-leg’ to satisfy unnecessary pleasure which is a dirt-cheaper alternative to possibly enjoy a fellowship with a dear brother. Another who has counsel me for a year or so wanted to see that I have improved from thinking selfishly about my sexual innuendoes to start thinking about living for Christ. When mails like this come, often time I would put aside things that I am doing, and start reflecting. However, a man’s weak spot will soon fall in when lethargy kicks in, and remembering a girl he saw earlier that turned him on is good enough to bring him to engage wrongfully.

In this regard, I have to sadly say – being truthful really hurts. I have friendships lost because of my sexual appetite, and I have difficult conversations engaged yet finding myself evading because of wanting to show my impressive record of walking in faith. Sadly – none of these actually made me a better man. I might have become madder everyday by such engagement. Hypocritical and divided. Never single-minded. This might be the one area that I know needs attention (understating the fact that it is quite a serious matter).

Record 4: Moving on, and moving forward

In all that we see in life, we often forget how much we neglected the simple steps and promises when we partake the first steps towards maturity. With so much complication in life, we tend to overlook the fact that these hardships were not meant to be stalling us immensely. Rather, those hurdles should never be moments that detracted us against making our steps ahead into completion: completing the race.

When we read about Hebrews, we always forget the context behind the letter sent to the Hebrews in Rome during the time when Nero reigned in late first AD century. We forget that those people were facing persecution of embracing Christianity in ways not in direct aversion against the crude governance of Nero, but on compromising their belief to subscribe to what the government endorsed – Judaism. On first note when we read up the epistles to the Hebrews, we often neglected the significance of various parallelisms between Judaism and Christianity inside. In addition, towards the end, the famed ‘Hall of Faith’ of which we have our forefathers running ahead in the journey towards attaining the glory of Christ predominantly encouraged everyone – to ‘put off everything aside and let’s fix our eyes upon our Christ, the author and perfecter of our faith’.

Anyway, it would be good that reading up more on the context will enable you to understand the epistles better, and in turn helping you to see clearer why and how it can apply. Anyway that’s another day for intensive bible study articles. Back to where I was.

We have the tendencies to look at our present failures and start thinking if God loves us after our failures. Some will take to the other extreme and think that God will definitely forgive us, so why don’t we engage all the more? Both mentalities have been inculcated within churches, and definitely plagued many of us along the way of growing in faith. I personally was inclined towards a judgmental God too much at times.

Since young, I have been educated to view every step as impending path towards irreversible consequences. This mentality not only paralyzes my present state of faith, it also causes inferiority for me towards relating to my church friends. Their apparent ‘do-well’ outlook and conversational content dominate the entire discussion, and sometimes I would be left to casually talk on things apart from more meaningful conversation. I longed to talk more on my struggles within the family (of the difficulties with my mom on the subject over my subscription towards believing in Christ when she is a pluralism Buddist), over my sexual struggles (awkwardly, I often see such subject brought out with immediate hushing from the crowd), over my identity crisis in church (I often tried hard to make conversations with people but they seem to put up the mask that claimed that things are running well and I seem to be the only one that’s not doing well), over my awkwardness of engaging in the music ministry (I always had difficulties being stable with my band mates within the same worship team because of the already not-so-close-relationship I have with them. So whenever during practice and the actual worship session, I tried to sublime myself, and ended up making a lot of mistakes in which I know I would not if I have concentrated on the band’s chemistry – which I find it hard to keep up with), over the contention of the meaning behind each activity organized by church committee (there are moments when I have reservations towards what are the objectives and the purposes behind organizing certain get-together events)… the list could go on and I would always find reason that detracted to think that my duty for church is merely to sublime my troubles and difficulties and just ‘serve & worship God’ – which evidently didn’t help much since I am distracted by the thoughts as listed above. It has been a struggle so long that after a year, I have gradually found myself isolating from the group spiritually and emotionally. By keeping such distance, I thought that I would make things easier for me to communicate and learn to understand them. However, by such doing I found myself detracting away from what God has willed and intended for us as the body of Christ.

I definitely have forgotten how much important it was, as the body of Christ, to not only engage in ‘meaningful’ conversations with fellow churchgoers, but also making effort to talk deeper and understanding their spiritual state and being mindful over their physical needs. These are the acts of being a disciple of Christ, all embodied to serve others. One important lesson I have learnt though, that in the act of serving others for Christ, I mustn’t put separate needs over people (and even myself) – and rather being a disciple, I should be there for them, pray for them and serve them whenever I could as a brother in Christ. We have separated our ministries so much that we have sections where we care for physical needs, and sections on prayers only where we care for spiritual needs, and sections on fellowship where we are concerned on how people are doing (therefore mental needs).

[Background]: Greek’s teaching has influenced our mindset for centuries, and its apparent influence has also dropped into the doctrines within our churches. Evidently if we understood the teaching of Greek philosophy, the element of mind, body and soul were segregated and should be taken care of on separate account. Gnostic elements were drawn from Greek’s philosophy that infused Jesus being only the soul and not the flesh of the living God – in which the shadows of this mentality sipped throughout generation. If we understand the essence of Scripture reading in our Jewish roots, it is that mind, body and soul are in one same element, that whatever we take care of the body (nourishment), will also consider the mind (the engagement in conversation during partaking a meal – or even the traditions of the meal taken) and also the soul (the depth of the conversation that will touch the heart especially when meaningful conversations were engaged. Of course there are elements of which the actions alone speak louder than words, for example the act of feeding, the culinary skills involved, the act of serving others during a meal, etc).

At this point of juncture I believe there’s a need to review on my journey to continue being Christ-like. Compared to the previous years, I wouldn’t want to make promises that couldn’t be committed (and in the end fell off because of difficult circumstances. Rather, I decide to work on this in a small group setting, with my mentor (who I have detracted for 2 years due to differences I had with him in the past – but on recent months we manage to find the reconciliation and started to meet at least for prayer and sharing). This time, as determined as I could, I believe that the major need is not to fight against porn addiction (as what I have always struggled with for years) – but the need deeper than the porn addiction. Much of which could be traced back to the need for intimacy, a person who I can look to and love her for (therefore the act of physical consummation is probably the result of consensual and passionate adoration towards the gift of God – which will be quite a while I suppose). This will have to work out in different stage.

Besides, I am thinking on my concern with the church, and now that I have moved to coastal Malaysia, there will be slight inconvenience in travelling around Singapore during weekends and going to church is no longer as easy as how it was. There isn’t any church back in coastal Malaysia, though it is not that far off to go to the church in Singapore (a 1.5 hour single trip perhaps). I will explain on separate account the decision to move to coastal Malaysia, but it would suffice to say that I didn’t fully agree on moving out – yet seeing in the long term the importance of having better savings return (which I am not doing too good in Singapore) – this would probably seem to be a better choice.

Many things have happened that caused multiple revisions in my decision-making. They are often time confusing and purposeful in causing more difficulty to engage in a community that serves Christ. Perhaps this will serve a good lesson to retract all the privileges that I used to have, and start feeling the pain of difficulties and yet still holding on to Christ. I learned through my darkest days that those moments taught me the value of God’s grace the most. This will be yet another period of ‘hard time’ for me, but I hope for prayers in strengthening my walk in faith with Christ – through the good and the bad times, especially… the bad times.

[short]: reverting back to this web blog

Apparently, I found myself lost without a community back in Blogspot.

So I have decided to change and switch back to Xanga.

More posts coming up, and my sincerest apologies for being isolated for awhile.

By the way, Merry Christmas guys!

[reflection]: solitudes' purposes

We often thought about solitude as something that has unnatural means of interaction with self, or in a state of 'deep spirituality'. I am not too sure if that works in different places in the world, but it certainly worked thus back here. We are too often concerned about the state of 'constant get-together' concept that 'every weekends are spent with friends and family'. Hardly you see things outside whereby people are alone most of the time. Even if they do, there is a high chance that they were having appointments somewhere, and they are commuting public transport to get there.

Well, not so much of a bad thing, but we often forget the significance of reflecting about things, and taking serious notes about the character we have. I don't mean this to be something productive. Instead, it could be an idea that is 'counter-productive' in the human sense for our current generation. You may need to spend time in silence, thinking about things in life that probably could be random and very much dispersed. You may not be concentrating on simple things, but of extremely complex ideas that may have taken much toll on what you can handle alone. In the end, the effort might not only be 'counter-productive' but also being sublimed by the 'lack of improvement' from where you begin.

Somehow, I wondered if making a difference in that moment really matter that much.

We are given several decades of living. If we were to expect ourselves to be a better person (or a more improved person) within a couple of decades, then what is there for us to live for the remaining years? Sure there will be new struggles, but having we thought about this primarily more akin towards excuse than root reasons? If there are things in life that 'rudely' come over us expecting us some form of 'action-result' combination, are we to immediately have them solved?

I read an article from Henri Nouwen that challenged me a lot - and brought me down to think hard about being in solitude and being 'slow' in the process of getting things done. Sometimes, in real life, God actually hinted on moments where it is necessary to remind His sovereignty instead of our pathetic lordship.

Henri suggested that perhaps we are so consumed with the culture of 'living in the fullest with people around' that we often meet up every day, every week, and hopefully every moment to talk, share and rant about things. Definitely in the Christian culture, this is commendable. In fact in the early churches people often meet up and be in fellowship with one another. The meal partaken symbolically represents the reminder that we are the body, not 'stand-alone'. However, Henri urged to have moments where we could hone the moment of 'solitude', and put melancholy in life to reflect about things. It would do good to remain in silence for a while. Imagining that might actually surprisingly let God come into the midst and speak to us. That seems to put a definition on prayer, doesn't it?

Further down the article I was quite embarrassed when the article pushed through the notion of 'productive' and insist on doing things 'counter-productive'. Sometimes, we often want to get things done, without understanding the after-effect of our entire being being physically and mentally fatigue later on, not realizing that the effort itself also took a toll over our spiritual state. Merely compartmentalizing will not help to see how every of our effort meant anything to the entire being. There hence, Henri suggested to see that all things worked for the greater good of what God purposes in our lives. So, rather than trying to push too much for getting things done, when there is a season for being 'slow', why not take that time to be 'slow' and 'reflect' about things in life?

Food for thought, perhaps.

[poem]: our right to be top... and what we lost...

sadness engulfed, none denied,
whatever that is lost, yet memory attained.
denial in heart yet the longing to will,
at least some hope in this brutal insanity.

too much was given, too much was expected,
none to listen, who could lend a shoulder to bear.
between you and me, lays a racing track,
who's the first is the ultimate priority.

a hand to help, so much to bear,
'cause of the onlookers, so shy to care.
here there hence I am, fending things on my own,
with people 'advising', why don't you leave it alone?

sometimes wonder i did, would life be better off,
caring for your own soul, then go into the world to offer.
seems like charity works best when you are at your best,
then offering to people didn't pinch much to your own.

but wait - if that's true, then what does sacrifice mean?
what o'all the point then to live and to die?
when we have people in need, and we give what we could,
even at the expense on our own life, we would give it all.

my dear, i think we need to think,
our selfishness may send us to our best.
but at the end of the competing road,
would we care for others, even when the end is nigh?

[observation - and penitence]: when the others say...

I was having my lunch earlier on at one of the highly populated working district in Singapore, when I got the chance to sit beside a group of people chatting about life.

The conversation was very much typical daily lifestyle-related, but when it comes to the topic of something closer, I am rather disturbed but the way certain people opinionated.

"You know, iPhone new software iOS 5 really sucks. It is making my Facebook slower. Then for those users who used to jailbreak, now they cannot jailbreak at iOS 5 anymore. I want to download free software now cannot, because need to pay. It is not fair you know? It is making life more difficult. I am so used to download free new movies, music, software. Why can't they understand we consumers have the highest say over things? It is not fair to not have everything for free!"

If it is meant to be on a stand up comedy impromptu, that should be fine. However, I was genuinely surprised when the discussion was not only dead serious, it was an announcement against the anti-piracy movement. The lady (who happened to look pretty & young, appealing on the outside) appeared to notoriously claim that consumers should have everything for free.

That really disturbed me, especially when the notion of consumer being gods are the prominent theme in the conversation.

As I went off, walking down the isle towards a nearby coffee cafe, I noted the surrounding area, and I couldn't help but notice the apathy the people there have towards poverty. There are plenty of maids, cleaners, building contractors and several 'lower class jobs' hanging around the central area where there is man-made green pastures, and there are job executives hanging around smoking and calling on their iPhones, 'Blackberry'-es, etc. One particular poignant visual that captivated me was when a Caucasian, with his Singaporean female counterpart, were smoking around a corner close to the green pasture, and an old man lying across the green pasture sleeping. Obviously their casual, occasionally loud laughter may have disturbed the poor soul for sleeping, letting alone the fact that the couple were smoking.

I was not happy seeing the visual, but with extraordinary contempt I decide to look around. One do not need to come back another day to see the same vision everywhere around. It hurt me to see - how much the technology has advanced to appease the consumer, and we have people left behind, without even thinking about the hard work they have provided every single day of their life.

It is sad that we lived in a consumerism idealism, that we all deserved the best of what we have for a price so low that every one could afford, yet even the people left for poverty were left to fend on their own. I often thought about the social justice we all always tried to advocate, and how much we send people overseas for mission field - but where is our strength when we see the same state of poverty lying at our front door? Would we shove them off, and try to step over those in need around us, and jump towards the neighborhood further downtown? Isn't that absurd?

These thoughts are easy to pen down, but to apply and to learn to use - even I have difficulties applying them. And I struggle to. But when I think about the vision where we meet Jesus, it shivers me to think that Jesus might not recognize us.

"Depart from me, you evil one. For when I am naked, you leave me be. When I am hungry, you didn't give me food to eat. When I am shivering with cold, you did not clothe me with a cloak."

"When did we ever see you naked, hungry and shivering with cold?"

"The least of those you did not do unto, you didn't do for me."

Penitence, and repentance. And I, upon seeing it here, walk up to the poor soul - and placed the water bottle for him. And he continued sleeping, ignoring the noise around the city - as if the surroundings are part and parcel of who he is.

Sometimes I wished that I can offer more than just a water bottle. A Living Water, perhaps. But my consciousness... always stopped me. Always put me on hold.

Lord... have mercy on me.

[short reflection]: where does contempt bring us?

I remembered looking upon the scarlet heart advertised on the screen every weekend on church services - displaying video clips downloaded from websites to inspire youths and young adults of a generation that is media-savvy and heavily driven.

We all are very great hearers, to be frank. And we are excellent critics of watchers as well.

"Oh the video reminds me of God's love, and how we should demonstrate the love to our neighbors, our families, our colleagues, our schoolmates."

"The video is stimulating! God speaks to us today as relevant, through the visuals! Thank God for talented people like those who created these videos!"

As relevant as they are (in which I would not dispute), I beg to differ on how much these would actually convicts us in long term.

I see the same group of people (not immediate similarity, but of the same characters that I know of), who have expressed their desire and their hunger to pursue God's righteousness through Facebook and Twitter, and at the next moment starts condemning the group of people they find irritable. Notably the people condemned were 'fortunately cleaners, contractors and installers' who have no sense of civic mindedness and cultured mentality.

I observed some who actually were on the train station, while giving up the seats for the elderly, were bad mouthing the poor foreigners who despite their able physicality, were just 'not well-kempted enough' to deserve a seat. The elders, who have great jewelry and obviously well mannered, were prioritized.

I happened to know some very godly people who have told me of their testimony of reaching out to people of many ages in their working place and various area of evangelism and describe the many eventual witnesses, and yet - when it comes to appreciating work - weekend's the only eventual goal, 'so that we could rest in Him, and meet up with church friends for movies, Wii, XBOX, and football matches'.

I somehow wondered, at times, where would I be? I often fail too in my conduct, and I noted that I have been very edgy in accommodating with people I found distaste with. There are some who actually did irked me and I actually lamented to my supervisors how much I disliked their working ethics - without actually directing and guiding them.

I hate the work of deception, especially when dealing with acknowledging the spiritual poverty in our selves. However, I cannot help but feel guilty every night thinking how much I thought I have 'higher ground' than those of my church friends who apparently think that they are 'highly spiritual'. And we all have besetting sins, some that are willingly committed, some may not be obvious. How often I forget that I am also part of the condemned party.

Where does contempt bring us in this generation? How are we far from the spiritual state that brought our forefathers such as John Wesley, Martin Luther, St. John on the Cross, St. Teresa of Avila, and even our immediate counterparts like Billy Graham, David Pawson, John Piper - to their knees and pray that 'God will have mercy on us all. Forgive us of our sins.'?

I am learning too myself. To give up the debauchery life, and away from the dose of lust - and hoping to seek community that can truly support, no matter what, each other. However, how are we able to extend the invitation to others who desperately need Christ through our feeble hands - yet not feeling the distasteful dissent of our human counterparts who may have practiced preferences over different people - and may not like to mix with us eventually?

I extend this question to all earnest pilgrims, and also to myself - to remind myself of my fallen self.

Lord have mercy on us all.

[short post]: a good friend tells me...

Strangely, in the middle of me standing by for a sound event, in which I was the engineer in charge of the sound programming.

And out of kindness he told me to pursue and not to stick to current life.

I think about it, and I realized there are a few people who already tell me that I should continue my passion as a bassist, if not a sessionist.

But I have recently just thrown off my dream because of the sad, realistic world whereby the higher goal you chase, the lonelier you become, and the worse person you will become.

So... after what he told me in length, I am left to wonder should I really rethink my decision?

A good church friend told me similar too, and that bothers me a lot.

[temporary shut down post]: moving to another blog site

Hey guys,

Turn out that I have been having difficulties trying to access my blog from home. I have to go outside where I can use my smartphone tethering in order to access to Xanga. Not sure why, but the slight inconvenience it has caused me initially has gradually become a difficult task occasionally. Knowing that I have severe random bouts of writing inspiration, this inconvenience has caused me some difficulties.

So I have decided to move to another blog site, which I used to maintain it during my late university years. It has been my constant reflection on very starkly emotional post and of which once in a while, I will look back at those and felt impressed upon God's hand on me when I reflected on what has happened.

For those interested: http://renjinko.blogspot.com

I currently leave the comments column on the left side, not just for blog-relevance, but also for simple and short prayers. I thought that simple penning down sometimes do mean a lot to me, because they came in like a simple word of encouragement from the Lord too. By the way, I thought that it would be nice that you can leave in your email for further correspondence as I treasure continuity in friendship, not just simple 'hi-dropby-bye' kind of conversation.

I might come back once in awhile just to be ensured that I can start accessing Xanga from home, but in the meantime, I will use 'Blogspot'. So, hopefully you can bear with me the inconvenience.

Thanks and I appreciate the occasional love showered upon. Thank you so much.

[update]: moving from another blogsite to HERE

After the 2 years I had, I constantly update my Xanga-blog, as I found the page to be rather community-oriented, and very accountable.

Several months back I found difficulties in accessing the website, and frequent disconnection. As my writer-block became rather random nowadays, I find it hard to keep up with the erratic performances running on Xanga.

And so, I have decided to navigate away from that blog for a while and refreshing my 'secret' blog site that I have not been maintaining ever since my university years.

Note, however that I occasionally post some rather emotionally-drenched blog posts that I have written on Xanga as well. Certain posts deserve preservation, I suppose.

For those who came in from Xanga, thanks a lot for keeping me accountable and continuing to support me through prayers and all. Really appreciate that you come in. Now that we are using different platform, I hope the prayers can still be left, and certain lengthier ones can be further expanded through emails. Do let me know though, if the interface here seems distracting. I have customized a lot of them here, and if there's a need for additional features do let me know. I will see what I can do.

Lastly, blessed be you'all for dropping by. Thanks a lot. Really appreciate it.

[reflective]: the dangerous tide

Normally, when I purposefully put a long silence in-between post, it would be safe to conclude that there are things in life that are bothering me such that I couldn't have much time sitting down in my favorite 'outdoor-school compound' within the city to do my reflection. Most of the time it would be due to work commitment.

However, for the recent weeks, though the work commitment took the same amount of precedence compared to the rest of my other 'problematic' concerns, I have more serious concern on the level of appropriate-ness I am treating my life.

Bear with me though - this post may not sound the same as how you know of me, based on the post put up earlier. There's a lot of 'catching up' in terms of trying to get the writer's block back.

----------------------------------------------------------------

The longer I worked in my current company, the more I felt that I need to rethink the notion of 'perfect work for life'. I remember when I was younger - having the notion of wanting to do the kind of job that will satisfy my life and be able to live the dream that everyone dreams of. I thought that being a sound designer would be an ideal, knowing that at the very least - that was my interest, and that is what I think I can do best.

Well, after some time, I thought it wrong. Living in our broken and fallen world - no matter how 'ideal' the situation is, you will still have to meet up to the corrupted world. The corrupted working hierarchy, the broken work ethic, the 'inhuman' part of our human nature, and the sinful nature of eventuality. Nothing is perfect.

Even in the face of 'idealism'.

I have been crafted to do sound design for many conferencing solution, and just when I start to get the hang of it and start getting some reputation, I have to deal with the broken human relation and how selfish people are. When I hope to have people lending their supports for me, somehow I am being stuck in the rut, and I am the only person needing to get away with it. Others don't seem to care.

And for months I have observed the way people work, and I start to realize - whether secular or religious (even Christian-dominated circumstances), we can never get away from being fallen and being around the fallen people. Somehow, you will still need face them. And need to at times fight against them.

I have been thinking of leaving this job for a while. Seriously tired with whatever that is happening, I want to take some time to discover more things in life. I chose to work in an underpaid work, with worse environment and humbler setting, in hoping that I would learn to mature (as I have gradually believe that harsh times hone better men) - but now I realized that not only have I succumb to the temptation of being wild and restless (just like the contractors who I worked with), but I have started to lose some ground for self-contemplation. Many concerns I have in mind have gradually changed from being kinder to being more urgent. And the real issue to address human relations have subsided so much that now I am like one of those people who I took pity upon when I first joined in: being brusque.

A friend noted yesterday that I have become harsher, less patient, and very vulgar at times. My endurance for stress level has deteriorated, and if I were to continue without resting I might end up being directionless, and eventually being lost. I dislike this friend cause of some of his characteristics that I felt very unwelcoming, but he has brought home a point that humbly silence me. He is right. I am getting lost.

----------------------------------------------------------------

I have not been able to commit in a relationship anymore, after what I have gone through with first and second, and I am not sure if I am keen to go on for a third one yet. Not that I am still grieving for the first 2, but I am unsure of what I want to eventually. Time after time, I wished that I could remain single and be alone just be anonymous. I have times where I look on the white pale wall beside me and I wished that my existence will not leave any single mark on that untainted wall. However, thinking about how I have once meant something in that 2 girls life before, I started to wonder what is life for me.

But worst of all, I have felt a lot indifferent about things, and when I attend a sermon, most of the time I felt tearful to see how much I have veered away from what God has originally intended. I offered myself as a musician to God when I was in my late teens, and now the songs that I have been playing have not been very 'worship-ly'. Sad songs about my existence, and how much I would like to get away just to get myself a quiet space seems a lucrative option, but what should I do in that period? I have stopped a while meeting with friends and counselor who felt that my existence matters more to them than to myself, but I couldn't bring up myself to see and talk to them. Would they want to listen to a person who has become a beast now? He who has more apathy towards being a better person - who anyone cares for guy like this?

I wore the label of being indifferent when I was younger, because I know how exhausted I was in caring for them. When younger, the more I cared for my friends, the more hurt I felt when they hurled insults and back stabbed me. I could only hold my tears because of the notion of being a 'tough guy'. Now, there are no more tears to dry, because all the sadness has become a normality in my daily life.

"Never trust anyone. What's the point?"

----------------------------------------------------------------

Yesterday, I purposefully discussed my financial situation to my financial planner because of what I see myself being imminently impoverished with my current lifestyle. Due to taking a pay cut, much of my lifestyle cannot remain as how it used to be. And I didn't realize it until I saw myself in debt for 3000 to a friend and have not been able to punctually pay the monthly rental - and still struggling to pay of my study loan which still worth about 20K. Worst of all, I have yet to tell my parents because I am ashamed to tell them about my inability to spend wisely.

I don't know if this logic works right, but I give my money a lot to church and donation, because I felt they deserve more than me. But I do spend some money on savings plan in order to live a better life in the future. So I reasoned myself that I may suffer now, but when I got older, having a family, they might have a better life.

3 years into this, and I realized that I have made a huge mistake in deluding myself thinking that I could reason things through. In actual fact, I have not thought about living 'with a family', and I have not spend appropriately on things that are meant to be. Every month, I have enough just to survive, and perhaps I may have owed many more than saving up more. At my present age, this is not a good way, and I will eventually squander off everything that I should have, and be a prodigal myself.

Perhaps when I was still in my previous company, I should have swallowed the pride and remained working in that company, and tried to at least look practically at the income that they have provided for me. It is quite high and at that time I still managed to pay off my loan, my rental, and have some money for my family.

Now, after all these discussion, my financial planner decides to be more blunt and requested that I be accountable to her for the finance spent.

"You need to be honest not just with me, but with your mentor, your family and above all, yourself. If you keep on doing this, you will only make yourself becoming worst. No amount of high salary can help you get in shape."

Somehow, talking to a sister-in-Christ who is also a financial planner, who also is someone of same generation makes things easier to get blunt and brutally honest. After all, if I continue to delude myself thinking that I am still alright, things might get worse off than where it started.

"Now, first thing first - get your basic right. You need to have at least an emergency fund. Afterwards, we will talk about investment, better savings plan. But now, I will not take a single penny from you until you are able to make sure you understand first your own financial crisis. Don't talk about the debt ceiling increases in US, the many debt crisis alluding in Europe, the unhealthy economic booming in Third World Countries. Look - how much knowledgeable will never get you to understand that you need help. You can only look at yourself, and see with your naked eyes how bad things are."

Of course, I wished she would say those, but she didn't. Nevertheless she tried to tell me to consider first what situation am I having before thinking in the bigger picture. That revelation of her words humbled me.

And I start to realize that it is important to slow things down, and breathe in one at a time. One step at a time.

----------------------------------------------------------------

I decide that it is time to find back the friends who used to be very communicative with me and talk it out. Thankfully, they share the same belief with me, so it is easier to talk. I do realized that there are times when I sugarcoated or exaggerated some truth in order to add element of drama, but as time goes, I realized there's no point adding flavor to what has happened. Eventually I need to acknowledge that I need to do something about it. It may take days, weeks, months even years to get it right, but at least I need to understand that it needs to get right.

Perhaps I can start first by drafting a few emails. Perhaps.
